I grew up (literally) learning to love reading almost entirely because I was a Titanic buff (although I didn't really know it at the time) and discovered Clive's 'Raise The Titanic' back in about 1978 or so. I read the prologue and instantly became a fan. Since then I have anxiously waited for each subsequent Dirk Pitt release. In a very real sense, I owe my entire love of reading to Clive Cussler. I discovered that I really DID love to read--I just hadn't found the kind of book that *clicked* with me yet...that is until I found Cussler.

Clive is in retirement these days, but you'd never know it with the volume of books that have been coming out with his name so boldly displayed on the cover. Within the last 2 years he has released 'Medusa', 'Corsair', 'Spartan Gold', 'The Silent Sea', 'The Chase, 'The Wrecker', 'The Adventures of Vin Fiz' and has at least 3 more books scheduled to be released before 2010 is over. This does NOT seem usual for a retired individual...and it sure is a MUCH busier schedule than Clive adhered to when he wrote full-time all by himself. No matter WHAT you think of it, us fans are the ones who benefit from his non-busy schedule.

'The Wrecker' is another period historical adventure tale set around 1907...definitely a slightly different type of story than what we have been used to seeing from the creator of Dirk Pitt, who always seemed to live life a couple years ahead of the rest of us. Part detective mystery, part adventure tale and ALL fun, The Wrecker gives us fans of Clive's style of writing a totally new type of adventure to embark upon. I admit that I rarely read historical novels of the past--and when I do, I prefer to read mostly non-fiction...but once again, Mr. Cussler is helping me expand my horizons once again as I took a gamble on the first Isaac Bell adventure, and feel entirely like it honestly wasn't a gamble whatsoever.

If you are having second thoughts about picking up 'The Chase' or 'The Wrecker' (and coming soon, 'The Spy'), just keep this in mind: It's Clive Cussler. He RARELY lets us down...in fact, I'd go so far as to say Cussler at his worst is still better than most adventure writers at their best. This is a fun tale of the American life at the turn of the previous century in what I can best describe as a very fun and entertaining story. It gave me several hours of what I like best: a chance to just get away from it all and be transported someplace else, even for just a little while...and 'The Wrecker' did just that admirably.

"The Wrecker (Isaac Bell)" Overview

In The Chase, Clive Cussler introduced an electrifying new hero, the tall, lean, no-nonsense detective Isaac Bell, who, driven by his sense of justice, travels early-twentieth-century America pursuing thieves and killers . . . and sometimes criminals much worse.

It is 1907, a year of financial panic and labor unrest. Train wrecks, fires, and explosions sabotage the Southern Pacific Railroad's Cascades express line and, desperate, the railroad hires the fabled Van Dorn Detective Agency. Van Dorn sends in his best man, and Bell quickly discovers that a mysterious saboteur haunts the hobo jungles of the West, a man known as the Wrecker, who recruits accomplices from the down-and-out to attack the railroad, and then kills them afterward. The Wrecker traverses the vast spaces of the American West as if he had wings, striking wherever he pleases, causing untold damage and loss of human life. Who is he? What does he want? Is he a striker? An anarchist? A revolutionary determined to displace the "privileged few"? A criminal mastermind engineering some as yet unexplained scheme?

Whoever he is, whatever his motives, the Wrecker knows how to create maximum havoc, and Bell senses that he is far from done-that, in fact, the Wrecker is building up to a grand act unlike anything he has committed before. If Bell doesn't stop him in time, more than a railroad could be at risk-it could be the future of the entire country.

Filled with intricate plotting and dazzling set pieces, The Wrecker is one of the most entertaining thrillers in years.
